The Khan's Palace

The beautiful Khan's palace of Bakhchisarai, the legendary "garden city", aroused the admiration of all who had ever been here. Enthusiastic lines about it were written by great poets, writers, musicians, monarchs. This palace is  an amazing and undeniably a unique example of the Crimean Tatar architecture. A real city in the city: with mosques, baths, mausoleums, richly decorated, painted and decorated with great care and skill. Getting to the territory of the khan's palace, you find yourself in the amazing and mysterious atmosphere of the East.

The construction of this amazing palace began in the 16th century, during the reign of Khan Sahib I Giray. Previously, the residence of the Crimean khans was located elsewhere, but the yard grew, expanded, and eventually the ruler, grandees, numerous servants and security became crowded. Then there was the decision to build a new palace, which today we have the happiness to observe. The oldest buildings of the complex are the Great Khan Mosque and the Sary-Gyuzel Baths erected in 1532. Strictly speaking, there is an older building here - a portal called Demir-Kapa (1508), however, it should be noted that it was built in Another place, but here it was postponed somewhat later.

With each successive khan, something new appeared in the palace, each ruler wanted to put something in memory for grateful descendants. During the war between Russia and the Crimean Khanate, when the capital was taken by Field Marshal Minich's troops, the palace was destroyed, but Captain Manstein was commissioned to make a description of the palace, which he made. Thanks to this, the palace was restored.
In May 1787, Bakhchisaray visited Catherine II. Together with the Empress there were representatives of other leading European powers: the Emperor of Austria Joisif II, the ambassadors of France, Austria and England.

Two fountains are beaten in the Bakhchisar palace: one of them is chic, pompous, with complex vegetative ornamentation and gilding, it is called the "Golden Fountain". But  more popular is fountain called "fountain of Tears." The name he received is not accidental: a water source was built during the reign of the khan of Crimea-Giray in memory of his beloved wife, who died early. Since then, the fountain has a romantic and sad halo.

It is better to combine the trip to the Bakhchisar palace with a hike to Chufut-Kale, for example, in the morning - climbing to the cave city, and after dinner in any Tatar restaurant you can already go to the khan's palace. There are two options for tickets to the palace: to purchase a general for visiting all the exhibitions, or separately. Better together, so all the expositions are very interesting, and half a day is enough to bypass all the sights. Entrance to the courtyard of the palace is free, there you can stroll, sit by the fountain, admire the flowers and take pictures without restrictions. By the way, the shooting is also allowed in the palace, there are no prohibitions. In the halls there are a lot of interesting exhibits, national costumes, all utensils, the life of the Tatars in those days is very detailed.
